You can't just decide to become a plumber and start work tomorrow, however. The State of Arizona has some very specific requirements which you need to meet.

  • You need to acquire four years of work experience to apply for a state plumbing license. In order to get these years of experience, you will need to put in time as a plumbing apprentice.
  • You will then need to pass the specific exam required for your chosen area of plumbing work.

The State of Arizona classifies plumbers as either residential or commercial. You will then need to obtain a surety bond, liability insurance, and get Arizona worker's compensation coverage if you plan on hiring employees. If you take these steps, then you'll be able to apply for a contractor's license with the state. Once obtained, you can start your work as a plumber in Arizona.
