Maryland Plumbers

The State of Maryland places a lot of emphasis on training that has been obtained within the borders of the state – so much so that though they do allow experience from other state's to count, the amount of hours that is required for out of state experience is much more than in-state experience. 32 hours of back flow prevention education is also required in the state, in addition to:

For Master's Licensure:

  • For in state experience, you will need 3,750 training hours with a licensed journeyman plumber and two full years of training.
  • For out of state experience, you will need 3.750 training hours with a licensed journeyman plumber; 7,500 hours and four years of documented training time with a licensed master plumber; OR 11,250 hours of board approved experience that was conducted under the supervision of a master's level plumber who earned their licensure from a written exam.
  • Verification of your journeyman license.

For Journeyman Licensure:

  • For in state experience, you will need 7,500 hours under the tutelage of a master plumber.
  • For out of state experience, you will need 7,500 documented hours of training that is under a master plumber who obtained their license by written exam.
  • Up to 1,500 hours of this experience can be offset by educational classes

Licenses in Maryland are valid for up to two years and are $70 and $50 respectively. To work with propane fittings, a separate license is also required.
