Maine Plumbers

The Plumber's Licensing Board controls the three tiers of licenses that are in Maine, so if you are thinking about becoming a plumber there, here's what you need to know.

  • The first level of licensure is the trainee license. There is no fee for this license as it is intended to be used for you to be able to gain the experience that you need to be able to obtain the next level of licensure.
  • The second level of licensure is the journeyman license. You must have two years or 4,000 hours of work experience to qualify for this level of licensure. The cost of this license is $30 and it is contingent on your passing the journeyman level exam, which is currently a $75 fee.
  • The third level of licensure is the master's license. To qualify for this level of licensure, you must have one year or 2,000 hours of work at the journeyman level OR have four years or 8,000 hours of work experience as a trainee. The cost of this license is $180, and the exam fee is $100.

Licenses in Maine are only good for the year they are issued. If you fail to renew your license for the beginning of the year, then you must retake the exam at the level of work you desire.
