Virginia Plumbers

In this historic state, plumbers are licensed at three levels:

  • Contractor
  • Journeyman
  • Master

In order to obtain the journeyman license, you must show between two to six years of practical experience as a plumber and a complimentary level of training. At two years of experience, you can be approved to take the journeyman exam with two years of certified education. At six years of experience, you simply need 80 hours of certified education to potentially take the exam.

To obtain a master license, you will need one full year as a licensed journeyman. You may also obtain a master license with ten years of practical experience accompanied by an affidavit of witnesses who can confirm the quality of work.

Contractor licenses can only be obtained after a master license is obtained, and a Class A, B, or C license is also required to hold this license. The benefit with this license is the level of contract work that can be completed.  If you hold a license in another state, you can test out at that license level to operate in Virginia.
